Title: Investigation the frequency of preterm birth and its related factors in the births performed in Shahid Beheshti Hospital, Kashan during the years 1399-1400
Background: Premature birth is considered as the main cause of infant mortality. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of preterm birth in singleton pregnancies and related factors in preterm births performed in Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Kashan during 1400-1399.
Materials and methods: A descriptive study was conducted on 221 cases of mothers with premature births and 221 cases of term births during 1400-1399. The extracted information, including the demographic and clinical characteristics of the mother, was analyzed from the mother's records. Data analysis was done in SPSS software (version 16) using chi-square and t-test. A significance level of less than 0.05 was considered.
Results: The findings showed that the prevalence of premature birth is equal to 9.2%. In mothers with premature birth: Maternal age under 20 years, first time pregnancy and pregnancy over 3 times, positive history of premature birth in previous pregnancies, blood pressure disorders in pregnancy, bleeding in pregnancy, premature rupture of the membranes are significantly more than those with non-premature birth are considered as related factors.
Conclusion: Prevalence of premature birth in Kashan city is almost similar to the general estimate of premature birth in Iran. Knowing the factors related to premature birth leads to the prevention of this complication and reduces the costs of treatment and neonatal complications caused by it. Therefore, it is necessary to teach health care personnel and pregnant mothers about the factors affecting premature birth.
