Abstract:   (447 Views)
Background and Aim: Patent Ductus Arteriosus is one of the most common cardiovascular conditions in preterm neonates and may be associated with major complications such as respiratory distress, intraventricular hemorrhage, and growth impairment. Despite numerous studies, population-based data on the prevalence and associated factors of PDA in preterm infants remain limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of PDA and examine its association with gestational age, neonatal sex, and maternal underlying diseases.
Methods: This cross-sectional analytical, retrospective study was conducted at the Pediatric Specialty Center of Semnan. Medical records of 1,490 preterm neonates hospitalized between 2019 and 2022 were reviewed. PDA diagnosis was based on echocardiographic findings documented in patient records.
Results: The prevalence of PDA among preterm neonates was 17.11%. The results showed a significant association between lower gestational age and the occurrence of PDA (p < 0.001), with 70.6% of cases occurring in neonates with gestational age less than 35 weeks. A statistically significant association was also found between neonatal sex and PDA occurrence (p < 0.001). However, no significant relationship was observed between maternal underlying diseases and the occurrence of PDA.
Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that PDA is relatively prevalent among preterm neonates and is associated with gestational age and neonatal sex. These results may contribute to better identification of high-risk neonates and support early monitoring and intervention strategies, as well as provide a basis for future large-scale analytical studies.
