Background and Objective: Infertility is a complex disorder associated with genetic, occupational, and environmental factors. Various therapeutic approaches have been proposed and implemented, including the use of medicinal herbs such as ginseng extract, ginger, and Tribulus terrestris.
Materials and Methods: In this study, 50 male mice were divided into 10 groups (5 mice per group). The treatment groups included: control (Group 1), ethanol (Group 2), distilled water (Group 3), ginseng (Group 4), Tribulus terrestris (Group 5), ginger (Group 6), ginseng + Tribulus terrestris (Group 7), ginseng + ginger (Group 8), Tribulus terrestris + ginger (Group 9), and ginseng + Tribulus terrestris + ginger (Group 10). Treatments were administered via gavage for 35 days. Finally, sperm parameters (motility, Morphology, and viability), DNA integrity (protamine deficiency, DNA fragmentation), and blood MDA levels were evaluated in all groups.
Results: The results indicated a significant decrease in all sperm parameters in the ethanol-treated group (as an infertility model) compared to the control and sham groups (p < 0.05). Sperm motility, viability, and chromatin integrity significantly improved in all herbal treatment groups (both individual and combined) compared to the ethanol group. However, combined herbal treatments did not exhibit stronger effects compared to individual treatments.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that ginger, Tribulus terrestris, and ginseng can improve sperm parameters in alcohol-induced infertile mice.
