The effect of aerobic and resistance training combined with ginger consumption on insulin resistance index in men with type 2 diabetes

 Background: Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common metabolic disorders worldwide, and lifestyle modification is the first treatment recommendation for these patients. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of aerobic and resistance exercises combined with ginger supplementation on the insulin resistance index in men with type 2 diabetes.
 Materials and Methods: In this semi-experimental study, 60 men with type 2 diabetes (aged 40 to 65 years) were randomly assigned into six groups: aerobic training with ginger consumption, aerobic training without ginger, resistance training with ginger consumption, resistance training without ginger, ginger consumption without exercise, and a control group. The training protocol consisted of eight weeks of aerobic exercise (three sessions per week at 50–70% heart rate reserve) and resistance exercise (at 40–45% of one-repetition maximum). Ginger supplementation (500 mg oral tablets) was consumed daily. Fasting blood samples were collected 24 hours before and 48 hours after the intervention.
 Results: After the intervention, all intervention groups showed a significant decrease in insulin resistance compared to the control group (P<0.05). However, no significant differences were observed between exercise groups with and without ginger consumption in insulin resistance (P>0.05).
Conclusion: Both aerobic and resistance training and ginger supplementation independently improved insulin resistance in obese men with type 2 diabetes, but the combination of ginger supplementation and exercise did not show a significant additive effect on insulin resistance.
