Evaluation of the synergistic effect of antimicrobial properties of silver nanoparticles and eucalyptus plant on Streptococcus mutans

Background: Streptococcus mutans is the natural flora bacteria in humans, but this bacteri is the most important cause of tooth decay. In the present study, the anti-bacterial properties of essential oil and hydroalcoholic extract of Eucalyptus microtheca and silver nanoparticles were evaluated against the effects of a number of standard antibiotics against the strain of the bacteria.
 Materials and Methods: Antibacterial properties of the desired compounds and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, chloramphenicol and ciprofloxacin antibiotics were evaluated by disk diffusion method in agar against standard strain of Streptococcus mutans (ATCC: 35668). The GC / MS system was used to identify the chemical compounds of the extract and essential oil of the plant.
Results: The highest diameter of the non-growth zone of the tested bacterium was related to the combination of extract and essential oil of Eucalyptus microtheca and silver nanoparticles at 23± 0.2 mm, and the least was the combination of essential oil of this plant and silver nanoparticles at 7 ± 0.1 millimeters. Also, the diameter of the non-growth zone of the bacterium under the influence of antibiotics was recorded as 8 ± 0.1, 22 ± 0.2 and 9.0 ± 0.1 mm. In the essential oil of the tested plant, 44 compounds were identified. The main compounds were Eucalyptol, Alphapenin, L-Trans-Pinocarol and Araman dendron, respectively. In the extract of this plant, 30 compounds were identified, the main compounds were respectively Eucalyptol, globulol, Araman dendron, and alphapenin.
Conclusion: The results showed that silver nanoparticles in combination with extract and essential oil of Eucalyptus plant have an appropriate antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans pathogenic bacteria, which can be coدانشگاه آزاد اسلامی واحد تبریز، تبریز، ایران nsidered in the pharmaceutical industry.
