Abstract:   (10494 Views)

Background: Patients with morbid obesity have different signs .The overall morbidity rate among the patients with 50% over-weigh is twice. Many types of operations are invented to overcome the problem, one of which is gastric banding with mesh.

Materials and Methods: Thirty patients treated with gastric banding with mesh were identified for this study. A prosthetic mesh was used to create a small upper gastric pouch. All patients were checked 1 and 6 months post operation. Moreover, 14 patients were followed 12 mouths after the operation.

Results: Ninety percent of the patients were female and the rest were male. The average age of 43.3% of the patients was between 30-40 years and 60% of them have one or more co-morbid disease in the beginning of the study. Early and late complication was seen in 6.7% and 26.7% of the patients, respectively. The morbidity rate was 0%. The mean primary weight was 123±22/2 kg with a BMI of 46.9±7.1. After 1 mouth the mean weight excess was 10±4/6 kg, the mean BMI 43±7.3 (P<0.0001), and the mean BMI excess 3/9±1/8. In the end of the study the mean BMI was 31.5±5.1 and the mean BMI excess 16/8±6/6.

Conclusion: This study shows that the acceptable rate of BMI excess is 1, 6 and 12 mouths after the gastric banding. Moreover, 6 months post operation many of the complications of obesity were improved. Considering the limited and reversible complications of the procedure, gastric banding with mesh can be used as a useful treatment of very obese patients.
