Abstract:   (264 Views)

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease that causes demyelination and as a result physical and cognitive disability. The use of herbal treatments is considered a new approach in the treatment and control of this disease. frankincense is extracted from Boswellia plants, it has a long history in the treatment of chronic inflammation and memory enhancement. The aim of this study was the effect of administration of hydroalcoholic extract of frankincense (Boswellia Serrata) on some inflammatory markers in rats induced with MS (RIMS).
Materials and Methods: In this study, frankincense extract was made in three doses of 50, 100 and 200 ml with physiological serum and injected into rats for 10 days, and then TNF-α, CRP, nitric oxide (NO) factors, as well as the infiltration of inflammatory cells was measured and statistically compared with the control group.
Results: The results showed a significant reduction of inflammatory markers in RIMS treated with frankincense extract doses. Thus, the lowest levels of TNF-α, CRP and NO were observed in rats under the administration of 200 mg/kg frankincense extract (respectively 522.5 Pg/mL, 6.5 mg/L and 53.25 mg/L) which had a significant difference with their control treatments (727.5 Pg/mL, 74 and 11 mg/ L, respectively). A significant decrease trend was also observed with increasing the dose of frankincense extract in the level of penetration of inflammatory cells into the brain.
Conclusion: This research showed that the administration of frankincense extract can be effective in reducing some inflammatory markers and also reducing the penetration of inflammatory cells into the brain in RIMS. Therefore, frankincense extract and its derivatives can be a potential non-steroidal treatment option to improve and prevent the development of this disease in the future.
