The effect of combined aerobic-resistance training combined with vitamin D3 supplementation on lipid profile and fasting blood glucose in overweight elderly men

Background and Aim: Therefore, the present study was designed to evaluate the effects of a 12-week combined aerobic-resistance training program, in conjunction with vitamin D3 supplementation, on lipid as well as fasting blood glucose levels in overweight elderly men."
Materials & Methods: In a quasi-experimental design, 40 overweight elderly men (mean age: 67.09 ± 1.54 years) were randomly assigned to four groups after initial screenings: control, exercise, supplement, and exercise + supplement. The combined training was performed for eight weeks, three sessions per week, each lasting 90 minutes (aerobic exercise at 50-70% of maximum heart rate; resistance exercise at 40-70% of one-repetition maximum). Vitamin D supplementation was administered weekly as a single 5000 IU capsule for eight weeks. Serum levels of glucose and lipid profile were measured before the intervention and 48 hours after the last training session. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and paired t-tests at a significance level of P ≤ 0.05.
Results: The paired t-test showed that in the exercise and exercise + supplement groups, blood glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, and LDL levels significantly decreased, while HDL levels significantly increased after the intervention (P < 0.05). ANCOVA revealed significant differences between groups in glucose (P=0.01, F=12.20), triglyceride (P=0.01, F=2.39), cholesterol (P=0.002, F=2.56), LDL (P=0.01, F=3.41), and HDL (P=0.01, F=4.51) levels. These changes were greater in the exercise + supplement group compared to the exercise group alone.
conclusion: This study "suggested that consuming 5000 IU vitamin D3 supplements along with eight weeks of combined training improves lipid profile and blood glucose levels in overweight elderly men.
