Background and Aim: Diabetic nephropathy is a serious complication of diabetes, characterized by progressive renal inflammation. This study aimed to compare the effects of two different exercise training modalities on the inflammatory marker NF-κB in the renal tissue of diabetic rats.
Methods: In this experimental study, 22 male Wistar rats weighing (180±20 g) were randomly divided into four groups: healthy control, diabetic sham, diabetic+aerobic training, and diabetic+resistance training. Diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg). The exercise protocols were conducted for six weeks, five days per week. Blood glucose levels were measured using a glucometer, and NF-κB protein expression was quantified via Western blot analysis.
Results: Both exercise training modalities significantly reduced blood glucose levels and the renal inflammatory index NF-κB in the diabetic rats. Specifically, the resistance training group exhibited a reduction in blood glucose from 468±70 mg/dL to 246±83 mg/dL (P=0.001), while the aerobic training group showed a reduction from 377±131 mg/dL to 249±81 mg/dL (P=0.017). Furthermore, NF-κB protein levels decreased significantly post-intervention to 1.07±0.13 in the resistance training group (P=0.018) and to 1.13±0.2 in the aerobic training group (P=0.027). An inter-group analysis showed that resistance training produced a greater reduction in blood glucose compared to aerobic training (P=0.001).
Conclusion: The findings indicate that both aerobic and resistance training are effective in reducing renal inflammation under diabetic conditions. However, resistance training demonstrated more potent glucose-lowering effects. These results underscore the potential of resistance training as a complementary therapeutic strategy in the management of diabetic nephropathy.
