History and Objectives: Due to the effect of hypertension in younger age on adult life, hypertension and its well known side effects and since little is known about the state of adolescent blood pressure in high schools students of Kerman and in order to determine the blood pressure of high school students (Age of 14-17) and to determine the correlation of height, weight with blood pressure, the present study was conducted in city of Kerman in 1996.

Materials and Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study was performed on 870 students (Randomly, multi-layered, selected). Personal profile, age, height, diastolic and systolic blood pressure and arm circumference was taken. Prevalence of high blood pressure was assessed according to the TASK group guidelines and its relation with age and height with systolic and diastolic blood pressure was determined.

Results: The prevalence of high blood pressure was 6.5% and 7.8% among male and female groups respectively. Very high blood pressure among male and female groups were 1.7% and 1.3% respectively. Body mass index were 20.6±2.8 and 19.4±3.1 for females and males respectively, which had a strong and significant correlation with blood pressure when the blood pressure is not corrected with the biceps circumference in both genders. For weight, a similar relationship is obtained.

Conclusion: High blood pressure is prevalent among Kerman’s students. Due to inaccessibility of these information and chance of continuation in the future and well-defined side effects of high blood pressure, it is suggested these information are conveyed properly to adolescents and screening studies may be carried out for higher age groups in Kerman and other cities.
