Background and Aim: Myostatin and follistatin are key factors in the regulation of muscle mass, and changes in their levels can play a significant role in enhancing muscle function. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of eight weeks of bodyweight resistance training combined with propolis supplementation on serum myostatin and follistatin levels in non-exercising women.
Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 32 non-exercising women with a mean age of 26.71 ± 1.28 years were randomly assigned to four equal groups: placebo, supplementation, exercise, and exercise + supplementation (eight participants per group). The resistance training protocol lasted for 8 weeks, with three sessions per week, each lasting 50 minutes. The propolis supplement was administered at a dose of 900 mg per day, taken with lunch and dinner. Body mass index as well as serum levels of myostatin and follistatin were measured before and after the intervention using standard procedures under controlled laboratory conditions and ELISA kits.
Results: Paired t-tests revealed that myostatin and follistatin levels significantly changed in the exercise and exercise + supplementation groups after the intervention (P < 0.05). In terms of percentage change, the exercise + supplementation group showed the greatest reduction in myostatin levels (14.04%) and the greatest increase in follistatin levels (23.61%) compared to other groups. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) also showed significant differences between groups in myostatin (P = 0.001, F = 12.20) and follistatin (P = 0.001, F = 2.39) levels.
Conclusion: It appears that bodyweight resistance training combined with propolis supplementation can effectively improve muscle status in non-exercising women by reducing myostatin levels and increasing follistatin levels.
