Abstract

History and Objectives: Morphogenesis is achieved by the effect of different tissue factors including mesenchymal-epithelial interaction, but its chemical basis is unknown. One of the most appropriate models is the mammalian tooth, especially its pulp. The phenomena migration, proliferation and differentiation within dental pulp are affected by the components of extracellular fluid. In this respect, tenascin is one of these components that is involved in the initial stages of development and differentiation of some fetal tissues including teeth and is important in the pathogenesis of tumors.

Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted on 40 ball-c mice. Different development stages of dental pulp were evaluated within the days 12-19, using immunohistochemical methods and monoclonal antibody against tenascin.

Results: The finding showed that at the bud stage, tenascin is found in the ectomesenchymal tissue and basement membrane of enamel organ in a high quantity and there is reduction in its level in cap stage. With developmental progression, the tenascin level increases significantly in early bell stage for pulp and in late bell stage in cortex.

Conclusion: Tenascin can play an important role in morphogenesis during development of pulp. In this respect, epithelial-mesenchymal interaction is very important. Therefore, it is recommended to conduct more studies to determine the role of tenascin in the differentiation oddentoblasts following injury.

Abstract

Background: In traditional medicine, many herbal medicines like lamiaceae family are used as treatment for dementia. Lamiaceae family has many pharmacological effects including antioxidant, anti-cholinesterase, antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and enhancing cognition and memory. Salvia mirzayanii is one of the species of this family and has been used as an herbal medicine for many years. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of essential oil of S. mirzayanii on learning and memory in mice using the two passive avoidance methods.

Materials and Methods: The aerial parts of the plant were dried in shade and essential oils were obtained using clevenger apparatus. The active components in the essential oils of the plant were also identified using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). One-hundred and forty mice classified into different groups (n=10) were received certain doses of diazepam (0.5, 1 and 1.5 mg/kg) or the essential oil of S. mirzayanii (0.48, 0.96 and 1.92 mg/kg) by gavage tube. The step-down and step-through latencies were used to evaluate the learning and memory.

Results: S. mirzayanii essential oil significantly increased the step-down and step-through latency times in both methods (P<0.01).

Conclusion: Essential oil of S. mirzayanii can enhance learning and memory in mice and it has the potential of protection against Alzheimer and dementia.

Abstract

Background: One of the rare but complicating consequences of laparoscopic surgery is port site hernia, while leaving the fascia open in the site of less than 10mm port is generally accepted. It still remains a debate whether to close the site of 10 mm ports or leave the fascia open. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of port site hernia following laparoscopic colorectal resections.
Materials and Methods: between 2014 to 2016, files of all of the patients who had undergone laparoscopic colorectal resection in Shiraz Faghihi Hospital were reviewed retrospectively. Demographic data (age, sex and BMI) were extracted from the database. Then patient’s file was also reviewed for the kind of resection, port configuration, recovery issues, port site fascia closure and incidence of port site hernia post operatively. Gathered data were entered to SPSS database using descriptive (frequency, dispersion and central tendency indices) and analytic (independent t test and chi square) statistics using version 20 of this software.
Results: Files of 325 patients (184 male) with mean age of 56.41±14.09 (interval: 25-94) years old and mean BMI of 24.05±5.56 Kg/m2 were reviewed. 205 patients (63.1%) were rectal cancer and the rest of them were colon cancer cases. During study no case of port site hernia was detected and the prevalence of port site hernia was zero during one year follow up.
Conclusion: this study showed that not closing the fascia at the site of 10 mm ports was a safe practice and was not related to postoperative port site hernia.

Abstract

Background: obesity in adolescents has become a serious public health concern that will lead to many risk factors; therefore, this study was performed to study a causal model of food cravings based on cognitive self-awareness mediated by positive behavioral emotion regulation in obese students in Mashhad.
Materials and Methods: The method of this research was descriptive-correlational. The statistical population of the present study was all middle and high school male students in Mashhad during the academic year 2021-2022 and 320 subjects were selected by cluster sampling. The Food Cravings Questionnaire of Cepeda-Benito et al., the Metacognitive Beliefs Questionnaire of Wells & Cartwright-Hatton, and the Behavioral Emotion Regulation Questionnaire of Garnefski and kraaj were used to collect data. The collected data were also analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis and structural equations by Lisrel 8.8 software.
Results: The results showed that the causal model of the relationship between cognitive self-awareness, behavioral emotion regulation, and food cravings in students with obesity was confirmed based on various fit indices (P<0.05), Overall, cognitive self-awareness positive behavioral emotion regulation predicted 53% of the variance food cravings in obese students.
Conclusion: Therefore, according to the results, it is suggested that the Education and Welfare Organization implement cognitive skills and emotion regulation training by counselors and psychologists in planning and life skills classes for students.
