Adolescence health and friendships, a Qualitative study

Background : A adolescence is an important period of human development. Adolescents are more likely to participate in risky behaviors. Friendship play a unique role in adolescence and peers significantly influence on health. The goal of this study was to evaluate adolescents opinion about health and friendship.

Materials and Methods: A content analysis study was conducted on 41 healthy adolescents which were purposefully selected and interviewed. All interviews were recorded and then transcribed.

Results: Three main themes including: positive and negative peers’ effects, adolescents and opposite sex friendships, and adolescents and communicative skills were considered it seems that the adolescents need to be trained for their communicative skills as they will enable them to use positive effects of friendships and disregard its negative outcomes. Understanding adolescents’ perspectives is not only important but also useful for maintaining a healthy society.

Conclusion: Therefore, families, teachers, health workers and policy makers should develop effective preventing and intervening programs based on adolescence developmental processes especially tending to peers.
